The Chair of Microeconomics at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) is organizing a workshop on the “Dimensions of knowledge and technology transfer: Actors, channels and implications”. The workshop is intended to stimulate an in-depth discussion of empirical and theoretical papers on knowledge and technology transfer between academia, society and industry. We aim to bring together national and international scholars, both juniors and seniors, as well as technology transfer practitioners and policymakers to discuss current research and future trends in technology transfer research. The workshop is part of the research project “Opportunities and obstacles of knowledge and technology transfer in the German state of Thuringia” funded by the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society (TMWWDG).



We welcome contributions that include (but are not limited to) the following topics:

  • Science-Industry collaborations: Determinants, outcomes and effects
  • Academic entrepreneurship: Motivations, obstacles and long-term success 
  • Intellectual property rights: Commercialisation strategies, tradeoffs and returns
  • Scientists leaving academia: Destinations, job-fit and transferred knowledge
  • Societal engagement: Activities, actors and relevance
  • Governance of transfer activities: TTOs, policies and transfer ecosystems
  • Regional dimensions of transfer: Spillover, networks and regional economic impact


Keynote speakers

  • Christian SchneijderbergExterner Link (University of Kassel)
    • Christian Schneijderberg is Senior Researcher at the International Center for Higher Education Research (INCHER) at the University of Kassel. He is an empirical sociologist with the main areas of work in Higher Education and Science Studies and Sociology of Knowledge. Furthermore, he is coordinator of research on "Innovation and Transfer". He has published, among others, in leading higher education journals, such as Science and Public policy, Higher Education Policy and Scientometrics.
  • Valentina TartariExterner Link (Copenhagen Business School)
    • Valentina Tartari is Associate Professor in Economics and Management of Innovation at the Department of Strategy and Innovation, Copenhagen Business School (Denmark). She received her PhD from the Imperial College Business School in 2013 and she has been a visiting scholar at the MIT Sloan School of Management in 2015. Her research interests include knowledge creation, determinants of knowledge production and transfer, university-industry interaction, academic entrepreneurship, role of universities and science in innovative activities. She has published, among others, in leading innovation and management journals, such as the Academy of Management Journal, Research Policy, and the Journal of Management Studies.
  • Viktor SlavtchevExterner Link (Halle Institute for Economic Research)
    • Viktor Slavtchev is a research affiliate at the Halle Institute for Economic Research. His research focuses on productivity, human capital, entrepreneurship, and innovation. He is advisor at the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labour and Transport. There he is responsible for Saxony's innovation strategy.


Submissions and deadlines

Please submit an extended abstract (about 1,000 words) by March 31, 2022. Up to 20 papers will be selected for presentation based on novelty, quality and thematic relevance. Authors will be notified of the decision on April 11, 2022. Full papers are expected to be submitted by June 13, 2022. Each presenter will serve as a discussant for another workshop participant. The workshop is free of charge for participants and includes catering during the event. We offer a limited amount of travel and accommodation support grants to PhD candidates without local funds. To be considered for such a grant, please state your need and your eligibility when submitting your extended abstract.

We hope that the COVID-19 situation in Germany in June 2022 will allow us to have the workshop in person. Otherwise, the workshop will be held as an online or as a hybrid event.
